As the New Year approaches, you may resolve to invest in a better business security camera system. Increasing your security measures can provide numerous benefits and will likely pay off in the long run. Here are a few ways a security system can help improve your business.
The presence of security cameras not only helps to deter burglars from targeting your business, but it can also bring peace of mind to your customers and employees.
There have been instances where employees fake an injury to claim worker’s comp, as well as customers who may make false claims against the business or employees. Security cameras can prevent these instances or provide evidence to refute these claims.
Security cameras and surveillance can positively influence behavior, resulting in employees complying with company policies.
You not only want to secure the inside of your business, but protecting the perimeter is just as important. Loitering may send the wrong message to your customers, and may negatively affect your business.
Aside from loitering, litter scattered around your business can damage the business reputation. You want to maintain an appealing look for your customers, and excessive litter can be detrimental.
Rather than having a security guard on the grounds, you can actively monitor your premises from within or remotely.
Keeping track of your business traffic can improve your business success. You can identify the busiest hours and adjust your staffing accordingly. It may also give you insight to the most efficient business hours for your location.
If you have more than one location to monitor, an advanced security system will allow you to connect the different security systems. That way, you may be able to remotely monitor all sites from one app or system.

This year, Halloween falls on a Monday night. Whether you’re trick-or-treating with the kids, enjoying a night on the town, or simply commuting home, be sure to be vigilant and heed these safety tips.
Adjust To Your Surroundings
Drivers should turn headlights on by dusk, and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. Remember, there is more foot traffic on Halloween.
Pedestrian Safety
If you are the pedestrian or cyclist, do your best to make sure drivers can see you. For dark costumes, try adding something bright or reflective so that they are easier to spot. Cyclists should wear bright, reflective clothing and utilize flashing bike lights if possible.
Trick-Or-Treating
Children age 12 and under should travel with adult supervision. Those going door-to-door should remember to cross the street at corners, using the designated crosswalks and obeying traffic signals.
Strength In Numbers
Those mature enough to celebrate without a chaperone should stick to familiar and well-lit areas. If you will be celebrating outdoors, it is better to travel in groups.
Driver Safety
Popular times for trick-or-treating span from 5:30pm until 9:30pm. You should always be alert for pedestrians, but especially during this time, practice extra caution.
If you have any other Halloween safety tips to mention, please share them with us and your peers on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
Everyone from SecurityCamExpert.com wishes you a happy and safe Halloween!
Much like smart homes, smart cities aim to connect and protect while creating a more efficient living space. While smart homes and connected devices are slowly gaining in popularity, smart cities are working on becoming the next big trend.
To aid in a speedier adoption, a Smart City Forum has been created, which consists of CIOs and leaders from cities around the world. The forum allows cities to utilize top academic research with applied studies of various Internet of Things projects and smart technology.
Atlanta is among the cities involved in the Smart City Forum, and they are currently engaged in a pilot project. This project includes efforts to improve public safety, transportation, and water monitoring.
For public safety, plans for installation of smart security cameras are in place. However, this type of public surveillance can cause some uneasiness among residents. Aware of the concerns, officials plan on working with privacy experts and keeping things transparent when it comes to the technology and devices they employ. If residents oppose any plans, officials are dedicated to working with them to create a solution.
Aside from this, they are also aiming to improve transportation and water sensors. Traffic light synchronization is one of the ways they plan on improving traffic conditions. 300 miles of fiber optic cable will be laid to create a city-owned network, which will likely support the advanced traffic control system along with video surveillance and other smart city data. The excess capacity will end up being leased to raise money. Free Wi-Fi will also be available, however, the size of the Wi-Fi mesh network has yet to be determined.
Other plans include implementing license plate capture cameras, smart LED lighting atop smart poles, water meter sensors, and even smart city trash cans.
As expected, there will be lots of data that needs to be evaluated, and Atlanta will take care of that with the help of Georgia Tech and Georgia State University. They will run the big data analytics and report back on their findings so that the city can understand what they need to do to improve.
These pilot projects and the Smart City Forum will hopefully give other cities insight to what works and what doesn’t, as well as the size of the budget necessary to employ these technologies and systems. What are your thoughts on smart cities? Share with us on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Pinterest.

With the heartbreakingly common news of schools on lockdown for various safety issues, it’s no surprise that school security is a major concern. Despite attempts to up security measures, these unfortunate events continue. Some occurrences have been stopped before further escalation, proving that our efforts are not in vain. However, this still does little to ease the minds of parents and students alike. With many schools installing more security cameras, having more security presence and implementing stricter visitor policies, there are still incidences when someone slips through the cracks.
Some solutions to these vulnerabilities are window films and screens. While these are not necessarily new products, they have been improved over time and can be helpful. These films and screens work to slow down the efforts to break into the school, possibly buying precious seconds of time to react and possibly save lives.
Window films are placed directly on the window, acting as a reinforcement of sorts, making it harder to break the glass. The new and improved version is tear-resistant with added layers for a stronger hold. It also helps to hold broken glass, preventing shattered glass from flying and possibly injuring others.
Slightly more expensive, yet a bit more effective are security screens. Security screens boast a sturdier barrier for intruders. While neither films nor screens can stop bullets, they do make it nearly impossible to create a larger opening. Another benefit of security screens is that they are more obvious, and can act as a deterrent. If painted black, the screens can provide a tint, almost like a two way mirror. Outsiders can’t see in, but students and staff can view the outside.
These window films and security screens offer additional security from attackers. While they seem like a harmless and helpful security measure, some parents argue that they give the schools a prison look and feel. What do you think about these protective measures? Recently, police in Boulder, Colorado stirred up mixed emotions about the use of security cameras in a public park area. The police quietly installed these security cameras as they are part of a criminal investigation, however, they are in plain sight and not intended for covert surveillance. Some residents would have preferred some type of warning while others oppose the entire idea of being watched, regardless of an announcement. Then there are residents who don’t mind and believe they can help deter crime.
The opposition mainly stems from the failure to announce the implementation of security cameras. As these security cameras are part of a criminal investigation, the police are assuring the residents that pending closure of the investigation, a formal announcement would be made. While some residents believe it’s an invasion of privacy, it is a public park area and the recordings are kept for no more than a few days.
On the other hand, being left out in the dark about this decision could be a larger part of the problem. Not knowing you are being watched can leave you feeling violated, betrayed or embarrassed, which is why residents are unhappy. Ultimately, the goal of the security cameras is to keep the city safe, so the residents should have known about it and been able to express concerns.
The criminal investigation makes this a delicate situation, but if the security cameras are being used for the greater good, collaboration on how to make the system work should be addressed beforehand. Residents should be allowed to voice their opinions and ask questions. Proponents for the security cameras should be able to provide answers and defend what they believe will benefit everyone.
Both side pose valid feelings and concerns, but it is up to Boulder to figure out how to handle the situation. If this were happening to you in your city, how would you feel? How would you expect authorities to handle the situation? Share your thoughts with us on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+.

With the Green movement gaining momentum, more and more people are becoming eco-conscious. Energy efficiency is an important aspect and solar security camera systems fit right in. To service our eco-friendly customers, SecurityCamExpert.com will soon carry solar security cameras and systems.
There are numerous upsides to solar security camera systems. First and foremost, energy consumption is diminished. Consequently, systems are wireless, providing better adaptability. Solar security systems will end up saving you money in the long run.
Because all the components of the system are solar powered, the need for direct connection to a power source is diminished. As a result, your energy bill will decrease significantly. The system’s versatility is largely due to its wireless functionality. Solar security cameras can be installed where power sources are not readily available. So long as placement avoids shade or covering of solar panels, which potentially interferes with its natural power source, these systems should work adequately. As with all systems, maintenance should be done periodically to ensure proper functioning. With solar security cameras and systems, you may notice they are much more self-sufficient than the rest.
Solar security camera systems usually incorporate solar powered cameras, motion sensors and lighting systems. Solar powered motion sensors help to conserve power while alerting as soon as motion is detected. Solar powered lighting allows for better picture quality in low light environments. They also allow for greater illumination in specific areas of interest. Paired with motion detection and security cameras, you can identify possible intruders in the night and possibly scare them away.
Various locations can benefit from solar security camera systems. Wide, open environments like oil and gas well sites, construction sites, parks and public recreation areas are great for solar security systems. Due to the lack of power sources and the ample amount of light sources, solar security cameras could thrive whereas other security cameras would be challenging or expensive to install.
We will be carrying solar security camera systems soon – keep an eye out for updates. For now, browse our selection of wireless security cameras, network IP cameras, HD-SDI security cameras and more at SecurityCamExpert.com. Call us toll-free at 1-888-203-6294 to speak to us directly.
Need a lens for your security camera, but unsure of what you need? Having trouble deciphering the specs? Let us be of assistance. Below you’ll find some clarification to help you find what you need.
If you’re shopping for a camera lens, it is likely that you have a box security camera. Box security cameras usually don’t include lenses, which is part of their allure, allowing them to be adaptable. It is pertinent to know whether the lens and the camera are compatible. This is done by checking whether the lens and the camera are C Mount or CS Mount. These mounts are essentially older and newer versions of mounts, respectively. The CS mount is 5mm shorter, making it closer to the image sensor. The important aspect to know is that when the camera and mounting formats are the same, the system should work properly.
With the use of a C/CS adapter, a C Mount Lens may be paired with a CS Camera. Do not mount the lens directly without the adapter as this may cause physical damage. On the other hand, a CS Mount Lens with a C Mount Camera will not cause physical damage, but the picture will never be clearly focused. The main take-away is to find a compatible lens for your security camera.
The measurement provided, usually in millimeters (mm), refers to the focal length and not the actual size of the lens. The focal length determines the size of the viewing field and its magnification. With longer focal lengths, a narrower picture will be captured with greater magnification. With shorter focal lengths, a wider view is produced with decreased magnification.
In regards to focal length, there are two options: fixed or vari-focal. As the names imply, fixed lenses have a set focal length that cannot be manipulated. Vari-Focal is derived from “variable focus” meaning the focal length can be adjusted for zooming in and out. Focal lengths for vari-focal lenses are provided as ranges rather than a specific length.
One more thing to consider is manual or auto focus. Manual iris lenses allow you to physically control the focus, whereas auto iris lenses can we controlled electronically. Manual iris lenses are better suited for settings where lighting remains constant and the cameras are easily accessible for adjustment when necessary. Auto iris lenses adjust to varying lighting conditions to maintain the best picture and need not be accessible.
When considering camera lenses, placement of the cameras should be considered as well. Manual iris lenses are better suited for indoor settings where lighting is fairly consistent. Auto iris lenses are better suited for outdoor use or other settings with varying light levels. If zooming in and out is a necessity, go with a vari-focal lens rather than fixed. And if you need a wider range of vision, opt for the shorter focal length. Need a more narrow and precise range? A longer focal length is your friend.

Security is always a major concern, but with large events, like the Olympics or the Super Bowl, the risk is ever increased. Events of that magnitude draw massive crowds and attention, making them prime targets for criminals or terrorists to get noticed or make a point.
Histories of bombings and attacks prove that security measures should be heightened. Participants and attendees alike should be vigilant of their surroundings, but it is also up to authorities and the host of these events to provide safety and protection. With that said, for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, advanced security measures will be employed.
Along with police patrol, drones will be implemented. These drones will act as the all-seeing eyes in the sky, inconspicuously hovering over areas with the ability to zoom in on things like licenses plates and faces. These drones allow comprehensive surveillance to keep everyone safe from potential attacks, bombings or other serious threats.
For the next Super Bowl, security cameras, special sensors, bomb dogs and a 360-degree camera car used to search for suspicious packages are among the various security measures to be utilized. This year, attendees are also discouraged to drive to the game; purchasing a parking permit beforehand is required. These defenses aim to limit possible dangers to keep the masses safe.
While some security measures seem a bit imposing, these precautions are simply going above and beyond to protect the public. With past terrorist attacks and bombings, it is evident that better security and surveillance could have had a positive impact on preventing these catastrophes.
It is important to remember that monitoring the security camera feeds in real-time will act as a preventative measure, rather than review footage after the fact. While the facilities and law enforcement should provide protective services, it is pertinent that you also keep your guard up and watch for suspicious activity.

The holiday season is usually a joyous time, when families and loved ones reconvene and spend quality time together. But for some, this can be a stressful time as it’s also the season of gift giving. For those struggling to get by, it may seem near impossible to provide their loved ones with gifts they want or need.
Some stores offer layaway plans, allowing people to somewhat reserve an item and pay in installments. This is helpful for those who live paycheck to paycheck, offering a way to pay off items a little bit at a time rather than paying one lump sum upfront.
But some people really get into the spirit of giving and have been nicknamed “Layaway Santas” or Layaway Angels”. These are people who, whether anonymously or not, pay off strangers’ layaway accounts. This phenomenon gained popularity in 2011, when the first of the “Layaway Santas” struck – the person put down $500 to pay off three layaway accounts.
Since then this generous act has gained attention and many are following suit. Just this year, one Florida man spent $20,000 paying off 76 layaway accounts at a local Wal-Mart store. There is even a website set up (http://payawaythelayaway.org/) where people can donate as little or as much as they want.
The best testimony comes from the families on the receiving end of these holiday miracles. For them, a weight is being lifted off of their shoulders. Even if it is temporary, stress is relieved and the families can enjoy a blessed and blissful holiday.
The bottom line is that these people have earned their titles as “Layaway Angels”. By helping families in need they are spreading joy and cheer. And isn’t that what it’s really all about?
