Wearable Technology For Disabilities

Wearable technology has been a bit of a novelty for many consumers, feeding the desire for the coolest, newest tech on the market. Sadly, this technology has often fallen short of most consumer expectations.

Luckily, wearable technology is making a bigger impact on a more distinct population: people living with disabilities. These companies have honed in on this field and are making a difference.

eSight
This Toronto-based startup focuses on improving low vision through the use of electronic glasses. Because most people with low vision still retain their peripheral vision, these electronic glasses are equipped with high definition cameras which capture images that are then beamed to the individual’s periphery.

Thus far, the response to eSight has been positive.  Founder Conrad Lewis, who has suffered from vision loss himself, started the company in 2006. With a limited launch in 2013, eSight is preparing for a much larger rollout thanks to increased funding and support. They hope to achieve success in restoring vision for over three million people with low vision.

Ekso Bionics
Ekso Bionics produces bionic exoskeleton suits designed to assist paraplegics and stroke victims in regaining the ability to walk. The suits are built to absorb the user’s body weight, allowing muscles to be reactivated with minimal pain or discomfort.

What began as a project at the University of California at Berkeley over 20 years ago has come a long way. In its early stages, the suit was rather bulky and impractical in size. But with advanced technologies and the addition of Nathan Harding to the project in 2003, they were able to shrink the suits down to a feasible size and present their work to the market. The suits were named HULC (Human Universal Load Carrier) and sold to a U.S. military contractor. They were used to help troops comfortably carry 90kg of heavy gear.

When doctors presented the team with videos of paraplegic rehabilitation, Harding knew that their exoskeleton suits could make a difference. The shift toward medical and rehabilitative applications ensued and has proven a success as these systems are now used in over 100 rehabilitation centers around the world.

Neutun Labs
Another Toronto-based company, Neutun Labs championed the Neutun app, which utilizes the accelerometer in smartwatches to identify the shaking signals that often precede epileptic seizures. When the watch detects an oncoming seizure, an on-screen prompt appears. If, within a few seconds, no answer is received, notifications are sent out to preset contacts. Also, relevant health information is displayed for emergency responders.

The app is currently being offered for free on the Pebble smartwatches, with launches on the Apple Watch and Android Wear coming soon. As technologies and features advance, a monthly fee will eventually be put into place.

The cost of these technologies is definitely a topic of interest, as many individuals are living with disabilities. There are definitely buyers out there, however, the cost for production and relatively low demand leads to high prices. Finding a way to make these technologies more accessible to those who need it is the next hurdle for these companies.

Dash Cams: How Can They Help You?

Commonly used by authorities, dash cams are growing in popularity among drivers. Employing a dash cam in your car can help protect you. Should you be involved in a car accident, dash cam footage could provide evidence to who was at fault and help speed up the claims process. As a result, you may even avoid increases in your insurance premiums. But the benefits don’t stop there.

Fight Insurance Fraud
Aside from having record of your accident, you can help prevent insurance fraud. If you suspect the accident you were involved in, or one that you may have witnessed, may be a scam, you can turn in your video footage for review. It’s important to stop these scammers before you or someone you know becomes a victim.

Getting Out Of A Ticket
In the event that you were stopped for a traffic violation you did not commit, dash cam footage can help to prove your innocence. If the officer refuses to watch the video, you may bring it to court to contest the ticket.

Improve Your Driving Skills
Reviewing your driving footage can help you become a better driver. You can identify your weaknesses and improve upon them.

Review Your Teen’s Driving Habits
Or if you have newly licensed teenagers, you can monitor their driving habits. A two-way dash cam may help in this situation so that you can see whether they are paying attention to the road or not. Much like improving your skills, you can review the footage with your teen and offer tips or advice.

Keep An Eye On Your Unattended Vehicle
You can protect your car while you’re not in it. Most dash cams have standby mode, which is usually equipped with motion detection t activate recording. If someone hits your car, tries to break in, or causes any damage, you could potentially have footage of the responsible party. Releasing this footage to your insurance and to authorities could help you find the culprit.

Capture Unexpected Events
You’ve likely seen the incredible dash cam videos that captured the Chelyabinsk meteor in Russia or the plane crash in Taiwan earlier this year. While most of your footage may be mundane, you never know what you’ll record.

Dash cams can help to keep you safe and can be a great asset for your car insurance. Do you have a dash cam in your vehicle? How has it helped you? Share your experiences with us on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Installation Tips For Your Network IP Security Cameras

These days, network IP security cameras are favored over analog security cameras because they offer more advanced features. Benefits include improved image quality, remote accessibility, and simplified installation and integration.

To gain the full amenities of network IP security cameras (or any security cameras), proper installation and placement is key. Follow these tips to maximize the performance of your network IP camera system.

Installation:

  • Be sure to match UTP connected devices (ex. couplers, modular plugs, wall plates) to the Category of the cable used and remain consistent throughout installation.
  • For optimal performance, by design and specification, cable runs in an IP camera system should not exceed 295 feet.
  • The bend radius for Cat 5e and Cat 6 must be limited to four times the cable diameter, and the acceptable bend radius is no less than 1 inch.
  • While installing Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, the pull tension cannot exceed 25 pounds.
  • Limit the length before stripping the sheath from a cable in a wall box. That way the excess can be easily pushed back into the wall cavity.
  • Use devices like D rings, bridle rings, and J hooks rather than stapling Cat 5e and Cat 6 cables. This will prevent the risk of altering the outer form or dimensions of the cable.
  • Maintain a parallel distance of 6-10 inches between Cat 5e and Cat 6 cables and high voltage wires (120/240VAC).
  • Strip your Cat 5e and Cat 6 cables back as little as possible when attaching them to connecting devices.
  • Use either the T568A or T568B connection format and stick to that format for the entire installation for consistency.

Positioning:

  • Consider the environment where you will be installing your IP cameras. Take note of things like lighting and conditions when selecting the appropriate camera.
  • When considering placement, be aware of the field of view and potential obstructions.
  • Test the network connectivity in the area where you will place your cameras. Poor connectivity will compromise the camera’s performance.
  • With all outdoor cameras, especially in areas know for lightning, use surge protection.
  • Be sure that your PoE power supply is sufficient for your system. Compute your power load and choose the appropriate PoE power supply.
  • To protect your cameras, use vandal-proof and/or weatherproof housing accordingly.
  • While Cat 6 UTP is the best choice, Cat 5e should suffice for handling most video transport needs.
  • Using fiber instead of metallic will allow you to run camera signals at greater distances and with greater bandwidth.
  • Always use safe installation practices for the safety of yourself and others.

Choose The Right Outdoor Security Camera For You

When it comes to safety and protection, security cameras are often one of the best bets. Whether indoor or outdoor, security cameras allow you to keep an eye on your property. Further, outdoor security cameras can act as your first line of defense against intruders.

These days, there are many styles and technologies to choose from when it comes to security cameras. The most common type is analog surveillance cameras, which work with CCTV (closed circuit television) software. Network IP security cameras are a bit more expensive than analog cameras, however, they offer more advanced technology and features.

Whether you go for analog or network IP security cameras, the style of the camera adds more options and benefits. You can choose between wired or wireless cameras, which can easily be determined by the desired location for your camera and the available power source. Bullet and dome security cameras both boast great versatility and features, but may be better suited for different settings. You may also benefit from other styles, such as hidden/nanny cams, infrared/night vision or day/night cameras, and more.

With that said, it is imperative to choose the appropriate outdoor security camera for your home security needs.

Before you start shopping for outdoor security cameras, you may want to take a walk around your property and take notes. Considering the different types of security cameras out there and the layout of your property, some styles may be better suited for certain areas. Bring someone along, like a family member, or have someone you trust do this as well so you can compare notes. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes or a different perspective may uncover things you didn’t initially consider.

Some things you may realize, for example, could be that if there are no streetlights near your home, infrared/night vision cameras will be helpful. Or that your open yard area could use a PTZ or wide lens camera for better viewing range, as opposed to a bullet camera, which may be more fitting for targeted areas like your front door.

Besides taking a look at your perimeter, another thing you may want to do is sit down with your family to address personal concerns. Your family members can offer insight on what areas they would like to be monitored. For example, security cameras at the front door or near driveways allow you to see who is approaching your home. Or you may want to keep an eye on pets or livestock, so a camera placed in that area may be necessary. One thing that seems to be helpful is remote access to your security camera feed while you’re away. Most security cameras on the market today support this feature.

Security Camera System Features

Over the years, home security has changed for the better. While some home security systems may still require you to set the alarm from the control panel mounted on your wall, and then rush out of your home in a set amount of time, others offer remote control features that make it much easier to secure your home.

Instead of worrying if you remembered to turn on the alarm or not, newer systems allow you to remotely access your security system from your mobile device. Enable or disable the alarm as necessary, keep an eye on what’s going on while you’re away, or even adjust the lights or temperature within your home.

If you’re looking to upgrade your old system, or looking for a new system all together, here are a few features that you will want your system to have.

Remote Monitoring & Control

Remote access to your system, these days, is ever important. As previously mentioned, support for remote monitoring and control can afford you extreme versatility and put your worries at ease. A way to help you choose a system is to search the App Store for the system you are interested in. Check the ratings and reviews as this will help give insight to how reliable the system is and how others are enjoying it.

Wireless Cellular Connection

Traditional security systems relied on phone lines which left your system vulnerable because these lines could easily be cut from the outside. Your best bet is to go with a wireless system, as systems with a cable connection are susceptible to the same vulnerability. The newest systems use a wireless cellular connection that is strictly dedicated to your security system for the best performance. There is no interference from other services, and maintains signal and power when Wi-Fi is down or in cases of power outages.

Alerts & Notifications

Remote support also allows you to receive alerts. You can monitor when your kids return home from school, if unusual activity is detected/recorded, or even if you forgot to close the garage on the way to work. Whether your system is armed or not doesn’t matter, these notifications are always on.

Connected Home

Connected devices help to enhance the safety and security of your home and loved ones. Devices like smoke alarms, CO sensors, and water sensors may connect to your system and warn you about impending emergencies such as a carbon monoxide leak or flood due to a cracked water pipe.

As you can see, there are many benefits to implementing a home security system. Secure your property and protect your loved ones with the proper security and surveillance equipment. What To Look For In A Security Camera System

Security camera systems can be helpful in just about any setting. Whether you want to protect your home and loved ones or you want to keep an eye on your business and employees while you’re away, surveillance cameras can play a large role in providing you with a better sense of security.

Before you invest in a security camera system, it is wise to determine your budget, as well as your specific needs. Will you be monitoring indoors, outdoors, or both? Will you need surveillance around the clock or only during certain hours? Depending on your needs, different styles and features of security cameras may best suit you.

Dome Security Cameras

These cameras are dome shaped and are often tinted or clouded so that the direction of the lens is ambiguous. You may see large scale dome security cameras in high traffic areas like casinos or subway stations. Because its style is rather elusive, dome security cameras keep people guessing which usually results in better behavior. While these cameras do well in public places, they can be successful in monitoring your home or business as well. People tend to opt for dome security cameras because they are fairly easy to mount and install.

Bullet Security Cameras

These cameras are more noticeable than dome cameras. The bullet security camera gets its name from its resemblance to a bullet shell casing. These security cameras can vary in size; some people use this style to be discreet and others use it to provide a daunting presence. Bullet security cameras are best used when there is a specific area you want to monitor. While dome cameras can capitalize on PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) abilities, bullet cameras often boast a better long range zoom. With the appropriate mounting bracket, bullet cameras can be installed virtually anywhere.

Infrared Security Cameras

An infrared camera can come in either bullet or dome styles. Regardless of the style, infrared cameras have LEDs (light emitting diodes) which surround the lens and are usually automatic. The Infrared LEDs enable you to monitor your business or property through the night. When the light source is low or diminished, the LEDs kick in, and often turn your color camera to black and white for better resolution.

Indoor & Outdoor Use

Most cameras are suited for indoor use, but not all cameras are ideal for outdoor use. You can find security cameras that are waterproof, weatherproof, or vandal proof, along with additional housing for cameras you wish to use outdoors.

Be sure to evaluate the locations for your security cameras, including light sources, protection and weather conditions (namely for outdoor cameras), surveillance field, etc., before you make any final decisions on your security camera system. How To Install The Uniden UDR444 Video Surveillance System

The Uniden UDR444 Video Surveillance System is ideal for home security. Included in the system are 2 weatherproof cameras, along with a 4.3 inch LCD monitor, which also acts as a control panel for your system. Installation is a breeze and can be done with some simple tools. For your convenience, we’ve broken down the steps for you.

Before installing your wireless security cameras, you want to think about the best placement for them. Remember that the clear line of sight video transmission distance is 500 ft. Walls, especially brick and concrete, can interfere and shorten the transmission distance, whereas placement near windows allows for better transmission. You will also want to avoid having direct light sources in the view of your cameras. These direct light sources include street lights, floor or ceiling lamps, etc.

Because these cameras are equipped with built-in infra-red LEDs, you will also want to avoid pointing your camera lenses directly at clear glass as it will cause a blurred image. The LEDs allow for night vision, which enables 24-hour surveillance. These LEDs are activated automatically. Once activated, recordings then switch to black and white. Another thing to keep in mind is that the night viewing range is 40 ft.

The optimized motion detection range is also 40 ft. You should avoid pointing the cameras at bushes, tree branches, or objects that may naturally move due to winds, as these may falsely trigger the motion detection sensor.

The system will alert you with an “Out Of Range” display message if the camera and monitor are too far apart, as well as a Low Battery icon when recharging the battery is necessary.

When installing the cameras, you may want to bring the monitor along to ensure that your camera is in the right position. Out of the box, your monitor should have enough power to last during installation.

The placement of your camera will dictate where the stand should be placed. Mount your camera with the stand:

  • on the bottom if you are placing it on a flat surface, such as a tabletop
  • on the side if you are placing it on a wall
  • on the top it if you are installing it on the ceiling

To mount the camera base, you will need an electric drill, a 5mm drill bit, and a No.2 Phillips screwdriver. Start by holding the base in place where you want to mount it and mark the screw holes. Next, use the 5mm drill bit to drill holes. Then insert the anchors and use the included screws to attach the base to the wall or ceiling. You may also attach the base to a flat surface, like a tabletop, if desired. Before attaching the camera, gently tug at the base to make sure that it is securely in place.

Next, attach the camera bracket to the mounting screw. You can attach the stand to the top or the bottom of the camera as needed. Tighten it with a few turns and then adjust the camera to face the direction that you desire to monitor. Tighten the camera brace up against the camera to secure it into place. Lastly, attach the antenna to the back of the camera. Repeat these steps to install the second camera.

To power up the cameras, connect one end of an AC adapter to the camera’s power pigtail. Use the other end of the AC adapter to plug into a 120 volt AC power outlet, which is usually a standard indoor outlet.

After you install your cameras, you may power up the monitor by pressing and holding the power button on the left side of the monitor for 1-2 seconds. You should see the Uniden title screen and then the live view from your cameras. If necessary, you may adjust the camera position to suit your viewing needs.

Now you have successfully installed your Uniden UDR444 Video Surveillance System. If you have any questions regarding these steps, please contact us. Call 1-888-203-6294 or visit us online at SecurityCamExpert.com. You can also connect with us on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Pinterest.

How To Protect Your Security Camera Cabling

Carefully and strategically employed security camera systems can help protect your property and your loved ones. It is a wise choice to invest in the safety and protection of your family and assets with a security camera system.

If you are opting for a wired security camera system, an important aspect of your installation is your cabling. Yes, you want everything connected properly, but you also want to protect your wires and cables. If potential criminals can access your wires, they can easily cut them and disable your system. Don’t be a victim – protect your security camera system with these tips.

Paint The Wires

An easy way to keep your wires hidden is to install them close and tight to the baseboards or where the wall meets the ceiling. Once you get the wires as flush to the surfaces as possible, use the same color paint to camouflage your wires. While they are still vulnerable, they are harder to spot.

Behind The Baseboard

Running the wire behind the baseboard is a relatively simple procedure that offers more protection. Start by gently removing the baseboard so as to not damage it if you will be using it again. Then, press the wire into the gap between the wall and floor. You may use a putty knife to ensure that the wires are as far back as they can go to avoid getting caught by the edge of the baseboards. Once they are in place, you may return the baseboards. The downside is that you will have to remove the baseboards again if there is some sort of electrical malfunction requiring you to access your cables.

Plastic Tubing

Running your wiring through plastic tubes through your wall is likely the best protection for your wiring, but also the most intrusive. This method not only hides your cables, but also protects it from the elements, rodents, and insects. If you decide to go this route, it’s best to get assistance from professionals. At SecurityCamExpert.com, we offer installation services and cable runs at competitive prices for your convenience. Contact us for a free quote or to schedule an appointment today.

To avoid wires and cables all together, you can opt for a wireless security camera system. We offer a great selection affordable wireless security cameras and surveillance equipment. Feel free to visit us online or call 1-888-203-6294 for more information.

How do night vision security cameras work?

Thanks to our ever advancing technologies, night vision has become a standard feature for most security cameras. Night vision security cameras allow us to keep a close watch on our homes or businesses around the clock. But how can these security cameras is near to total darkness? There are three different methods: low-light, thermal imaging, and infrared illumination.

Low-Light

Low-light security cameras use image intensifiers which make the most of a faint light source. Because they are attuned to work with limited light sources, the pictures they produce in these settings are excellent. Some low-light cameras can even identify persons. Of the different methods employed, this seems to be the most affordable and is commonly used among homeowners.

Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging technology uses temperature instead of light sources to produce images. This is based on the principle that objects radiate infrared due to temperature. This infrared energy, which is intensified with higher temperatures, creates the thermal image. When objects are cold, the image produced is black, whereas hot objects produce white images. Some thermal cameras can produce color images, and can even detect objects from far distances. Unfortunately, thermal imaging has yet to gain mainstream popularity, but is rather useful in other settings.

Infrared

Home security cameras utilize infrared illumination and motion detection for effective night surveillance. When the security camera detects motion, the infrared illumination lights up and captures images. Because the infrared is only triggered by motion, this saves power. LED lights enhance performance to produce excellent black and white videos and images. Infrared security cameras are often used for outdoor home surveillance.
